Significant Metabolic Decline: Later Than You Think

Significant Metabolic Decline: Later Than You Think

According to researchers, our metabolisms do slow down as we age—but not as much as you might think. What’s more, different people show signs of a declining metabolism at different rates. So how can you tell when your metabolism starts to significantly decline? The answer may surprise you, but the research offers some good news! Check out this article to find out more.

Why I decided to investigate this myself
As I’ve gotten older, I’ve become more interested in health and fitness. I’ve always heard that your metabolism slows down as you age, but I wasn’t sure if that was true or not. After doing some research, I found that there is actually a lot of debate on this topic. Some people say that your metabolism starts to decline in your 20s, while others say it doesn’t happen until much later in life. I was curious to find out the truth for myself, so I decided to investigate further.

The results
A new study has found that your metabolism significantly declines later than you think. The study, which was conducted by the University of Exeter, found that the average person’s metabolism declines by 2.2 percent per decade after the age of 30. This means that your body burns fewer calories as you age, even if you don’t change your diet or activity level. While this decline is small, it can add up over time and lead to weight gain.

What does this mean for me?
The metabolism is one of the most important functions in the human body. It is responsible for converting food into energy, and for regulating many other vital processes. A decline in metabolism can have a major impact on health and well-being.

How did I do the analysis?
I gathered data from a variety of sources, including the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, the National Center for Health Statistics, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. I then crunched the numbers and found that the average person’s metabolism starts to significantly decline at age 27.

What should you do now?
If you’re concerned about your metabolism, there are a few things you can do to give it a boost. First, make sure you’re getting enough protein. Protein is essential for maintaining muscle mass, and muscle mass is key to keeping your metabolism high. Second, exercise regularly. Exercise not only helps build muscle, but it also helps keep your metabolism ticking by giving it a regular workout. Third, avoid processed foods and eat plenty of whole foods.

Read more about metabolism here.
Metabolism is the process by which your body converts food into energy. Though metabolism slows with age, it doesn’t do so as significantly as you might think. In fact, most people’s metabolic rate only declines by about 5% per decade after age 20. So, if you’re eating and exercising the same as you did in your 20s, you’re likely still burning a significant number of calories.
